Park Forest Village, Pennsylvania

Park Forest Village is a census-designated place (CDP) in Patton Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the State College, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,830 at the 2000 census.

History

Park Forest Village, created in 1956, was the first large suburban development near State College. This neighborhood won several national awards for its design, which moved away from the straight streets and clear cutting typical of post World War II suburban developments. The use of gracefully curved streets and the retention of trees established a pattern for future developments everywhere.

Geography

Park Forest Village is located at coord|40|48|4|N|77|54|34|W|region:US_type:city|display=inline (40.801060, -77.909423)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.2 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 8,830 people, 3,388 households, and 2,124 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,711.4 people per square mile (1,432.5/km²). There were 3,473 housing units at an average density of 1,459.8/sq mi (563.4/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 84.78% White, 2.94% African American, 0.12% Native American, 9.13% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 2.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.60% of the population.

There were 3,388 households out of which 32.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.6% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 22.7% under the age of 18, 20.5% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 7.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.2 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $47,589, and the median income for a family was $67,981. Males had a median income of $51,953 versus $23,514 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $24,425. About 7.8% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 3.6% of those age 65 or over.
