According to the
United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 18.1square mile s (47.0km² ), of which, 18.1 square miles (46.9 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.11%) is water.Portage Township is bordered by Potter County to the northeast, Lumber Township to the south and east and Shippen Township to the west.
Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 258 people, 96 households, and 71 families residing in the township. Thepopulation density was 14.2 people per square mile (5.5/km²). There were 136 housing units at an average density of 7.5/sq mi (2.9/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98.84% White, 0.39% African American, 0.39% Native American and 0.39% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.39% of the population.There were 96 households out of which 36.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.0% were non-families. 24.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.18.
In the township the population was spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $34,125, and the median income for a family was $39,750. Males had a median income of $32,361 versus $26,161 for females. The
per capita income for the township was $15,001. None of the families and 3.2% of the population were living below thepoverty line , including no under eighteens and 10.3% of those over 64.References
