Neighborhood Charter School

Neighborhood Charter School is an elementary charter school in southeast Atlanta, Georgia, United States. It is located in the Grant Park neighborhood near Zoo Atlanta.

The school opened in August 2002, after being conceived and planned by a group of concerned parents, community members and educators. NCS is a public school and a part of the Atlanta Public School system. It operates under a charter negotiated between NCS and the Atlanta Board of Education. The school's curriculum is based on the Constructivism approach, which recognizes that students learn primarily by direct engagement with ideas and materials rather than through the passive transfer of information from books or teachers.

Enrollment

For the 2007-2008 academic year, there are 19 classes and 360 students. The racial makeup of the 2006-2007 student body was 38% Black, 48% Caucasian, 11% Multiracial, 2% Hispanic and other. In 2006-2007, 20% of students were in the free and reduced lunch program and 35% of students lived in single parent homes.

Testing

The average composite scores of all third graders on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills was at the fourth grade, seventh month level, which placed NCS in the 73rd percentile ranking. The school average for students meeting or exceeding standards as measured by Georgia's Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) was: Reading, 93.7%; English/Language Arts, 90.5%; Math, 80.3%; Science, 81.2%; and Social Studies, 91.3%.

Parental involvement

Parents are required to volunteer a specific number of hours at the school. During 2006-2007, families volunteered over 7250 hours which was 144% of the required volunteer hours.
