Volvo Penta was founded in 1907 in conjunction with the production of the first marine engine, B1. The Penta company soon became an established engine manufacturer, which in 1927 delivered the engine to Volvo’s first passenger car. Volvo acquired Penta in 1935 and Volvo Penta has been part of the Volvo Group since then.
The company business
Volvo Penta is a subsidiary of the Volvo Group. It provides engines and complete power systems to leisure boats, workboats, power-generating equipment and similar industrial applications.
Volvo Penta operates worldwide and has one of the industry's strongest brand names and the largest dealer networks with more than 4,000 dealers globally. The engine program comprises diesel and gasoline engines with power outputs of between 10 and 800 hp.
Volvo Penta has written marine history through a number of pioneering innovations, such as the sterndrive and the counter rotating propellers, Duoprop. Both of these innovations are regarded as the most important innovations ever in the marine industry.
In recent years, Volvo Penta has launched a new boat drive system with forward-facing propellers, and the joystick.
