History

In 1965, Robert I. Sweet and John White founded the Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (UTI) in Phoenix. Since then, the school has grown from 11 students and a one-building campus to more than 100,000 graduates with ten campuses nationwide. The company is now run by CEO Kim McWaters.

In 2001, the company's founders completed a leveraged recapitalization of the company together with private equity firms: Charlesbank Capital Partners and Penske Capital Partners (associated with Roger Penske). The company subsequently went public in December 2003.
