The points of the triangle, which are roughly equidistant to one another, cover the metro areas of San Diego, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. Once isolated areas containing little more than farms and sparsely inhabited desert, they are now among the fastest-growing counties in the US.

The counties in the Southwest Triangle include the following:

* San Diego County, California (San Diego Metro)
* Clark County, Nevada (Las Vegas Metro)
* Maricopa County, Arizona (Phoenix Metro)

Sub-Regions and geographical features include:
* The Mojave Desert
* Death Valley
* Inland Empire (California)
