Topton is a borough located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 1,948.

Geography

Topton is located at 40°30'11" North, 75°42'6" West (40.503049, -75.701764).GR|1

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²), of which, 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,948 people, 805 households, and 562 families residing in the borough. The population density is 2,844.0 people per square mile (1,106.1/km²). There are 842 housing units at an average density of 1,229.3/sq mi (478.1/km²). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.87% White, 0.05% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.31% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 1.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 805 households out of which 31.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% are non-families. 24.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the borough the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.0 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $45,888, and the median income for a family is $56,667. Males have a median income of $38,144 versus $25,476 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $24,009. 3.8% of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.9% of those under the age of 18 and 6.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
