Edward Worsfold Mowll

Edward Worsfold Mowll (1881 - 1964) was the fourth Bishop of Middleton [The Times, Monday, Aug 02, 1943; pg. 6; Issue 49613; col C E "New Bishop Suffragan Of Middleton"] . Educated at The King’s School, Canterbury and Jesus College, Cambridge , he was ordained in 1905 and after a curacy at Leyton became secretary of the "Church Pastoral-Aid Society". Incumbencies at Benwell , Southport and Oxford followed [“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] before becoming Provost of Bradford Cathedral in 1933. Elevation to the Episcopate followed ten years later and he stayed in this, his final post, until retirement in 1951. A “kind and fatherly man” [The Times, Monday, Jun 15, 1964; pg. 14; Issue 56038; col A Rt. Rev. E. W. Mowll Former Bishop Of Middleton ] he died in 1964.
