Cansfield High School

Cansfield High Specialist Language College, previously known as Ashton-in-Makerfield Secondary Modern, is a Specialist Language College of average size for boys and girls aged 11 to 16 located in a Ashton in Makerfield, near Wigan. The current student population is approximately 1,000.

Cansfield High School is one of three Secondary Schools in Ashton, the other two being St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School which is located next to Byrchall High School.

History

The site was once occupied by both Byrchall Grammar School and Ashton Secondary Modern previous to the relocation of Byrchall to its present location on Warrington Road.

When the grammar school moved to its present location, the buildings were then occupied by Ashton Secondary Modern School.

Recent news

"...there was widespread praise for Cansfield after an outstanding performance from the Ashton school...Cansfield gained a place in the top 200 most improved schools for their A* to Cs including English and maths. Cansfield headteacher Mike Southworth said: "This is the third year in succession we have scored record results. It's a testament to hard work, commitment and the fact that teachers and students work well together. I'm absolutely thrilled for everyone associated with Cansfield." Schools minister Jim Knight said: "I want to congratulate pupils and teachers at Cansfield High Specialist Language College for their excellent performance in this year's GCSE results. The results for the school show that it is amongst the top performing schools this year."Wigan Evening Post, January 2008"
