Springdale, Pennsylvania

Springdale is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, 18 miles northeast of Pittsburgh along the Allegheny River. The population was 3,828 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Springdale is located at coor dms|40|32|29|N|79|46|56|W|city (40.541491, -79.782124)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.8 km²), of which, 0.9 square miles (2.4 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.4 km²) of it (13.76%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3,828 people, 1,685 households, and 1,034 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,104.2 people per square mile (1,589.2/km²). There were 1,802 housing units at an average density of 1,932.0/sq mi (748.1/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 99.03% White, 0.29% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.18% from other races, and 0.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.21% of the population.

There were 1,685 households out of which 25.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.6% were non-families. 34.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the borough the population was spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.7 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $35,440, and the median income for a family was $43,476. Males had a median income of $36,711 versus $25,920 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $19,798. About 3.5% of families and 7.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.8% of those age 65 or over.

chool district

Allegheny Valley School District consists of Acmetonia Elementary (K-3), Colfax Upper Elementary (4-6), and Springdale Jr. Sr. High School (7-12). AVSD has approximately 1,200 students ranging from K-12, and approximately 100 staff members, ranging from janitors to teachers. The AVSD is the primary school district of Springdale, Cheswick and Harmarville.

On April 18, 2007, the AVSD was forced to shut down and cancel classes on April 19 for all students after a threat. The school was shut down, and most athletics events were canceled (with the exception of Softball and Track). Dr Janice Nuzzo has posted on the AVSD website (avsdweb.org) " A reward will be offered to anyone providing credible information that leads to the resolution of this matter"

High School athletics

Springale High School has numerous sports. They made a name for themselves in 2002, when the Dynamo Football team made it to the WPIAL Playoffs for the 1st time in 29 years under the guidance of coach Chuck Wagner, but took a loss to Sto-Rox 35-10 in the opening round. In 2003, Springdale football made it again to the WPIAL Playoffs, defeating the #1 seeded Rochester 24-23 in a triple overtime thriller in the semi-finals. Kicker Andrew Bosman kicked the game winning P.A.T. to send Springdale to the WPIAL Championships at Heinz Field. Springdale won it all at Heinz Field 30-13 to Sto-Rox. That WPIAL championship is Springdale's 1st Football Championship in 30 years. Springdale also made it to the playoffs in 2004 and 2005, but losing in the semi-finals both years to Clariton and Rochester respectively. Springdale Baseball made it to the WPIAL Playoffs in 2005, losing in the 1st round 9-8 to Our Lady of Sacred Heart. Springdale boys and girls Basketball also made the playoffs, both losing in the first rounds. in 2006 the Dynamo Baseball team clinched the Section 4 Championship, sharing it with Vinentician Academy, they lost to Geibel in the 2nd round.

2005 was a big year for Springdale sports. Football, Boys Soccer, Boys and Girls Basketball, Baseball, and a few individuals from the boys and girls Track team entered playoffs. The girls soccer team narrowly missed a playoff spot. Unfortunately, Boys soccer, and both basketball teams were eliminated first round. The football team made it to the WPIAL semifinals and lost to Class-A rival, Rochester. The Boys 4x4 relay team (Under the power of Dave Gajdosik, Jeff Simcic, Mario Camerota, Martin Tremper, and Nick Messina)and Amanda king advanced all the way to WPIAL Finals. The Relay team placed Ninth and Amanda king advanced to states with a 4th place spot.

Then in the year 2006-2007 the girls 4 by 4 in track went to WPIALS and won 3rd place. While freshman Alexa Sarsfield won the gold in tracks 400m. In the year 2007-08 season the boys and girls soccer teams have made it to the WPIALS. Boys only losing in the first round by Greensburgh Central Catholic 2-1. On the up side the girls team is doing incredibly well. With 16 shutout, the girls went to be section champs. The girls will be in the WPIAL finals on Saturday November 3. They will be playing South Park at Elizabeth Forward at 10am. Good luck girls.

In 2007:Varsity Dynamo Baseball team won the Section 4 Championship, beating California 5-2. Mike Devine was the winning pitcher.

The Girls Varsity Soccer team became Section champs finishing with a 17-2-1 record.

Varsity Football finished the regular season at 7-1 and ended the season at 9-2. They won their first two playoff games and advanced to the WPIAL finals played at Heinz field where they lost to Serra Catholic by a score of 10-6. They are led by Senior Running Back Nathan Zurisko and Sophomore QB Brian Shemenski.
