Rich Desktop Applications/Rich Internet Desktop Applications (RDA/RIDA)

Rich Desktop Applications/Rich Internet Desktop Applications (RDA/RIDA’s) are the next generation of client web applications. It follows the evolution from thick desktop clients towards the thin client architectures. The introduction of Rich Internet Applications (RIA) enhanced the user experience and controls, however, these web clients are still dependent on internet connectivity and browser functionaltiy.

In contrast to RIA’s, RDA’s are able to run off-browser and off-line. This means that a program can run directly from the desktop without being connected to the internet and outside an internet browser. For the development of RDA’s a number of platforms is available: Adobe AIR [ [http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/air/ Adobe Labs - Adobe AIR ] ] , Google Gears [ [http://gears.google.com/ Google Gears Beta ] ] . Microsoft has recently also entered the market with Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and a Java platform is also available.
