The constituency is one of two covering the
Metropolitan Borough of Solihull . It covers the town ofSolihull itself, as well as Shirley andOlton . It is a largely well-off, residential area, in the south-east of theWest Midlands conurbation .History
The Conservative Party had always viewed Solihull as a
safe seat , having held it since it was established in1945 until2005 . Yet, in the 2005 general election it was an unexpected gain for theLiberal Democrats , withLorely Burt beating the incumbent John Taylor by a small majority of just 279 votes. However, the boundaries are likely to change before the next general election, following a recent boundary revision report. The new 'notional' majority would favour the Conservative party candidate over the sitting Liberal Democrat MP.Members of Parliament
