Dove is a surname of Scottish Gaelic (and possibly also Irish Gaelic) origin, Anglicized from the Old Gaelic word dub (or Gaelic word dubh), meaning "dark" or "black". Its original use was in the context of a personal name, double-stemmed name, nickname or byname for a "swarthy" or "dark tempered" person. The surname Dove has several variants, including Dow, Dew, Duff, MacDuff, and McDuff. The first historical record of Dove (as "Duff") is found in 1341 in Aberdeen.[1]
