Tacuabe was a
Charrúa native from the region now known asUruguay .After the European conquest and colonization, the Charrúa population declined at the hands of local authorities, being practically exterminated by 1830. The last four known charrúas, including Vaimaca, Senaque, Guyunusa and Tacuabe, were taken to
Paris by François Curel in 1833, to be displayed as circus attractions.Guyunusa and Tacuabe gave birth to a daughter few months after they were taken. Vaimaca, Senaque and Guyunusa died during the first year in France. Tacuabe and his baby escaped, and disappeared after reaching the city of
Lyon .In
Montevideo , Uruguay there is a monument called "The Last Charrúas", ("Los Ultimos Charrúas" in Spanish), depicting Tacuabe. In addidition, the city and department of Tacuarembó are named in his honor.
