Castle Point is a parliamentary constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It returns one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, elected by the first past the post system.

Covering the area of Canvey Island, Hadleigh, South Benfleet, and Thundersley it is normally a strong Conservative seat, although it fell to Labour once, in the 1997 landslide. Bob Spink re-won the seat in 2001, but subsequently defected to the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) on 22 April 2008 (becoming the first and so far only seat that UKIP has held in the House of Commons).

Boundaries

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Essex, the Boundary Commission for England has created a Castle Point constituency based entirely within the boundaries of the district council of the same name

History

In March 2008, Bob Spink was deselected by the local Conservative Party association. After announcing leaving the Conservatives, he defected to the United Kingdom Independence Party in April 2008, and has now stated he will stand for them in the next General Election.
