Salvador Casañas y Pagés was born in
Barcelona , and studied at theseminary in Barcelona and theUniversity of Valencia , from where he obtained hislicentiate intheology in 1857. He was ordained to the priesthood onDecember 18 ,1858 , and then did pastoral work in Barcelona for several years. He later became aprofessor and therector of its seminary, and was made canon administrator of itscathedral chapter.On
June 22 ,1896 , Casañas was appointedApostolic Administrator "sede plena" ofUrgell onJanuary 18 ,1879 byPope Leo XIII , and laterTitular bishop of "Ceramus" on the followingFebruary 7 . He received his episcopal consecration onMarch 23 of that same year from BishopJosé de Urquinaona y Vidot , with BishopsTomás Sivilla y Gener andTomás Costa y Fornaguera serving as co-consecrators, in the Cathedral of Barcelona. Casañas was later named Bishop of Urgell on the followingSeptember 22 ; in this position he also served as Co-Prince of Andorra. The French Co-Princes of Andorra during his leadership wereJules Grévy , Sadi Carnot,Jean Casimir-Perier , andFélix Faure . He was a senator for theecclesiastical province ofTarragona as well.Pope Leo created him Cardinal Priest of "
Santi Quirico e Giulitta " in theconsistory ofNovember 29 ,1895 . Casañas was made Bishop of Barcelona onApril 18 ,1901 , and later participated in the papal conclave of 1903, which selectedPope Pius X . On Christmas Day in 1905, an anarchist made an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate the Cardinal in thecloister of the Barcelona cathedral.Casañas died in his Barcelona, at the age of 74. He is buried in the cathedral of the same.
