Brian Kerr (Judge)

Sir Brian Francis Kerr (b. 22 February 1948) is the current Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland. As a member of Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council he is styled "The Rt. Hon. Sir Brian Kerr" however, by convention this is abbreviated to Kerr L.C.J. in the law reports.

Sir Brian is the son of James William Kerr and Kathleen Rose, née Murray of Lurgan, County Armagh. He was educated at St Colman's College, Newry and read law at Queen's University, Belfast. He is married to Rosemary, Lady Kerr (née Widdowson) and has two sons.

Traditionally, the Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland becomes a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary upon the resignation or retirement of the previous Law Lord from Northern Ireland. This is because of the convention of having at least one (and usually only one) Northern Irish judge in the House of Lords. It is expected that this will also be the case with Sir Brian upon the retirement next year of Lord Carswell.
