- Galang Island
Galang (Indonesian: Pulau Galang), is a
island , 80 km2 located 350 m southeast ofBatam , [ [http://www.batam.go.id/home/eng/data_geografis.php Bida Website ] ] belonging to a group of three islands calledBarelang (abbreviation ofBatam -Rempang -Galang ). A member of theRiau Archipelago ,Indonesia , Galang is located just south ofBatam andRempang which themselves are just south ofSingapore andJohor . The nearest city to Galang isTanjung Pinang onBintan , situated about half hour boat ride.The island is connected by the
Barelang Bridge toRempang andBatam .There was a
UNHCR 's main administration office to runGalang Refugee Camp during the period of 1979-1996 where many VietnameseBoat People andasylum seeker s were temporarily accommodated during the determination of theirrefugee status and their subsequent resettlement in theUSA ,Australia and other European Countries.Many Vietnamese from their new resettled countries have come back to visit Galang.
There is also a 32 km2 island 180 m south of Galang, called
