Lord was offered the chance to have his own television show while he was still in high school. This program, "The Bobby Lord Homefolks Show", originated from
Tampa, Florida , and featured Lord singing behind a backing band. In the early 1950s, he won atalent show which led to an appearance onPaul Whiteman 's television show inNew York . Soon after, in 1953,Boudleaux Bryant heard one of Lord's demo tapes and passed it on toColumbia Records , who signed him. He began releasing country androckabilly material for Columbia and concomitantly performing on "Ozark Jubilee ", a TV program broadcast on ABC and based inSpringfield, Missouri , for over five years.In 1960, "The Ozark Jubilee" was cancelled, and Lord moved to
Nashville , where he was immediately offered a spot on the "Grand Ole Opry ". He continued appearing on the "Opry" well into the 1970s. He recorded forHickory Records starting in 1961 andDecca Records from 1967. During this time he also hosted "The Bobby Lord Show" on WSM-TV in Nashville, which was the afternoon counterpart toRalph Emery 's morning show on that station. Under the auspices of WSM-TV, he also hosted a weekly syndicated half-hour program featuring popular country artists. Lord's backing band on the syndicated show includedJerry Byrd onsteel guitar ,Jerry Whitehurst on piano, andSpider Wilson on guitar.In 1969, Lord left Nashville and went into a semi-retirement from the music industry to devote time to his family and his interests in
real estate andinsurance . In the 1980s, he was asked to hostTNN 's program "Country Sportsman ", later called "Celebrity Outdoors ", which he did until 1989.Lord is also the author of one book, "Hit the Glory Road" (1969).
Bobby Lord died at the age of 74. He was a resident of
