Travis Johnson (born April 26, 1982 in Sherman Oaks, California) is an American football defensive tackle for the Houston Texans of the NFL. He was drafted with the 16th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft out of Florida State University.

Prep career

Johnson attended Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California. He earned Parade, PrepStar, Football News and USA Today All-America first-team honors as a senior. Johnson recorded 104 tackles, including 32 for loss, and 17 sacks as a senior for the Knights while also setting school records for career sacks (61), tackles for loss (77), forced fumbles (14) and blocked punts (five).Before attending Notre Dame High School, Johnson played for his hometown of Oak Park, CA for one year, playing JV football and Varsity basketball.

He also played forward on the basketball team and participated in track and field, throwing the shot put and running the 100-meter dash.

College career

Johnson, a highly touted recruit coming out of high school, chose to attend Florida State University. After underachieving for three years, he enjoyed a breakout senior season. He started all 12 games at left defensive tackle during his senior year and was an All-ACC first-team choice after recording 50 tackles with 2.5 sacks, 18 tackles for loss and 12 quarterback pressures.

Pro career

Johnson was selected by the Houston Texans in the first round (16th overall) in the 2005 NFL Draft. Johnson has seen occasional playing time due to injuries and has been involved in some on-field incidents.

Johnson was involved in an incident on October 7, 2007. While playing the Miami Dolphins, quarterback Trent Green blocked Johnson during a blown play following a fumble. Johnson's knee impacted Green's head, knocking him unconscious and giving Green his second severe concussion in two years. Following the play Travis Johnson stood up, looked for the player who had blocked him and then walked towards Green while shouting and pointing his finger at the motionless player. Travis Johnson then ran to the Texans sideline where he was verbally reprimanded by Head Coach Gary Kubiak. The Texans received a penalty for taunting due to his actions.

Johnson claimed in a post game interview that Trent Green had attempted to injure him by hitting him at the knees and commented, "God don't like ugly...you know what I mean?". Former wide receiver Cris Carter defended Johnson's actions and remarks.
