Keys is a census-designated place (CDP) in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 458 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Keys is located at coor dms|35|48|19|N|94|56|46|W|city (35.805324, -94.946071)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.5 square miles (14.2 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 458 people, 174 households, and 128 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 83.3 people per square mile (32.2/km²). There were 194 housing units at an average density of 35.3/sq mi (13.6/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 56.77% White, 32.10% Native American, 0.66% from other races, and 10.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.06% of the population.

There were 174 households out of which 37.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% were non-families. 20.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.03.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $16,691, and the median income for a family was $17,279. Males had a median income of $29,000 versus $23,500 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $11,650. About 33.7% of families and 33.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 47.1% of those under age 18 and 31.7% of those age 65 or over.
