next_no = 4"Whenever You Call" is a song written and produced by American singer
Mariah Carey andWalter Afanasieff for Carey's seventh album, "Butterfly". The protagonist of this ballad discusses howLove is a strong force, and giving up to it, is inevitable. It is the beginning of a new love as she talks to her new partner and promises him if he should ever need anything, she will be there for him "whenever he calls". It was released in theUnited States as the album's sixth and final single in late 1998 (see1998 in music ).Because Sony had requested that Carey participate in the release of a greatest hits collection "#1's (album)", "Whenever You Call" was issued only as a
promotional single .Despite the lack of heavy promotion, "Whenever You Call" was a minor hit reaching number sixteen on both the Hot 100 and R&B airplay charts.
The song also appears on "#1's" as a
duet withBrian McKnight . Without Carey's prior knowledge, McKnight had recorded his vocals and had it mixed, using Carey's original vocals. Carey revealed in a various promotional interviews during 1998, that she was delighted when she heard it, and decided to re-record it together and add it to the hits collection. Its video, directed by
Diane Martel , uses the original solo version of the song from "Butterfly". It is a montage of shots from Carey's 1998 "Butterfly World Tour " as she travels to locations such asHawaii ,Japan , andAustralia .
