It is a more specialized and useful wiki created to be an extensive encyclopedia of the "Star Wars" universe, and is almost entirely in-universe. Wookieepedia was conceived by Chad Barbry [http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117964316.html?categoryid=1009&cs=1 Wookieepedia tracks 'Star Wars' - Entertainment News, Technology News, Media - Variety] ] [ [http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Chad_Barbry Chad Barbry - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki] ] and Steven Greenwood [ [http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Steven_Greenwood Steven Greenwood - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki ] ] and was launched on Friday
March 4 ,2005 under the hosting siteWikia . The site's first editors were mostly users of Wikipedia who were frustrated by the requirements of notability required for an article there, and the ensuing debates over deletion of content. Most of the first articles were copied directly from Wikipedia under theGNU Free Documentation License , and any "Star Wars" articles deemed too minor for inclusion in Wikipedia (e.g. ) are almost always transferred to Wookieepedia, assuming they do not have an article there already. In addition, certain sections of articles which had to remain out-of-universe to identify them as "Star Wars" articles on Wikipedia were "wookified" to fit the in-universe perspective of the wiki (for example, the removal of text like "is a fictional character in the "Star Wars" universe," removing the "(Star Wars)" disambiguation from links and so on). However, other sections of the wiki cover actors, artists, real-life companies, and culture in an out-of-universe perspective. Since its foundation, many more changes to the wiki's Manual of Style have been made.
Wookieepedia was the most visited wiki hosted by Wikia as of April 2005. On
2005-11-28 Wookieepedia was selected as the Sci Fi Channel's "Sci Fi Site of the Week." [cite web|url=http://www.scifi.com/sfw/issue449/site.html|title=Sci-Fi Site of the Week|publisher=Sci-Fi.com|date=2005-11-28 ] In January 2006, the site was Wikia's featured wiki of the month. As of
August 31 ,2008 , theEnglish language version of the wiki contains over 59,000 articles, making it the largest Wikia-hosted wiki in terms of article count, ahead of sites such asUncyclopedia —a parody wiki, andMemory Alpha —a "Star Trek " wiki. Wikia also hosts "Star Wars" wikis in Bulgarian, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovenian, and Spanish. Wookieepedia also coordinates its efforts with theGerman language [http://www.jedipedia.de Jedipedia] and the Polish language [http://www.ossus.pl/biblioteka/Strona_g%C5%82%C3%B3wna Biblioteka Ossus] .ee also
