After announcing their marriage Prime-Minister
Jan Peter Balkenende wrote in a letter to parliament that she had given "incomplete and incorrect information" about the duration and extent of her contacts with drug kingpin Klaas Bruinsma, [cite web|url=http://zoek.volkskrant.nl/artikel?text=Prinselijk%20paar%20loog%20over%20relatie%20mabel |title=Prinselijk paar loog over relatie Mabel|publisher=PCM Uitgevers |work=de Volkskrant |language=Dutch|accessdate=2007-08-31|date=2003-10-11 ] and that because of this, the government had decided not to seek permission for the marriage from parliament. [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3181514.stm BBC reports about "Mabelgate"] ] [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3655645.stm BBC reports about the wedding] ] In a letter to the Prime Minister dated October 9 [ [http://www.regering.nl/dsc?c=getobject&s=obj&objectid=49283 Letter by Friso to prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende, 9 oktober 2003] ] , Prince Friso stated that the couple had given some incomplete information, but had not given any incorrect information or did they lie. The couple admitted that the sailing friendship with Bruinsma was indeed closer than mentioned, it was however never a love or sexual relationship. This was later confirmed by Wisse Smit in a number of interviews. In a report later issued by the Dutch News Monitor Foundation [ [http://www.nieuwsmonitor.net/pers_mws.html Press statement Stichting Nederlandse Nieuwsmonitor about Mabel Wisse Smit 'Tegen onwaarheid is geen kruid gewassen'] ] , it was found that the Dutch media had largely contributed to blowing things out of proportions, especially after the prime minister had made 'unnuanced' comments during two news conferences. In this period she also received some negative publicity by revelations about heraffair , which started around 1993, with the married Bosnian UN AmbassadorMuhamed Sacirbey .References
