USS "Borum" (DE-790) was a "Buckley"-class
destroyer escort of theUnited States Navy , named in honor ofLieutenant (junior grade) John R. Borum (1907–1943)."Borum" was launched on
14 August 1943 byConsolidated Steel Corp., Ltd. ,Orange, Texas ; sponsored by Mrs. W. H. Ferguson, wife of Commander Ferguson; and commissioned on30 November 1943 , Lieutenant Commander J. K. Davis, USNR, in command."Borum" spent her entire
World War II service in theU.S. Atlantic Fleet . Until March 1944 she served as an escort vessel along the east coast and in theCaribbean , as well as atraining vessel inChesapeake Bay . She departed New York8 March 1944 for theBritish Isles to train for the coming invasion of Europe and to escortconvoy s between British ports. From6 June to22 June 1944 she screened the convoys carrying troops and supplies from Britain to theNormandy beachhead.For most of the next year "Borum" helped
blockade theChannel Islands and protect the shipping headed forCherbourg andLe Havre ,France . She assisted British forces in their occupation of the Channel Islands (11–12 May 1945). "Borum" departedEurope in June 1945 and, after a short period as a training vessel in Chesapeake Bay during July, she prepared to join theU.S. Pacific Fleet as ahigh-speed transport (APD-82).Following the Japanese surrender her orders were canceled and she reverted to training duty with
submarine s operating out of New London, Conn., and then acted as plane guard for "Croatan" (CVE-25) and "Solomons" (CVE-67). In January 1946 she joined Escort Division 4, but on28 March began inactivation atCharleston Naval Shipyard . She arrived atGreen Cove Springs, Florida , on29 April and was placed out of commission15 June 1946 ."Borum" received one
battle star for her participation in theinvasion of Normandy .References
