Plot summary
The setting is London in the late 1700s when slavery has just been ruled illegal in England but is still common in the British West Indies. Much period slang is used in the conversations.
The story starts with a rehearsal of Shakespeare’s play, "The Tempest," at the Drury Lane theatre where Cat lives. This play helps the general public to realize what is going on with Pedro and his evil master, the notorious Mr. Hawkins, who wants to take him back to the West Indies.
The main character is Cat, who is helping her friend Pedro, but she is not alone. They get help from Syd a burly boxer, Lizzie who is royalty with her brother Charlie, the Millers (or Quakers), a group of heavenly sisters and Frank who is always for Cat's best interest. They also have to be concerned with Billy Shepard, Cat's enemy.
