Formaldehyde releaser

A formaldehyde releaser is a chemical compound that slowly releases formaldehyde.

Antimicrobials

Formaldehyde releasers are often used an antimicrobial preservative in cosmetics. Examples include:

* Quaternium-15
* Imidazolidinyl urea (Germall 115)
* Diazolidinyl urea (Germall II)
* DMDM hydantoin (Glydant)
* 2-Bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (Bronopol) (formaldehyde release is not related to mechanism of action)
* Tris(hydroxymethyl) nitromethane (Tris Nitro)
* Hydroxymethylglycinate (Suttocide A)

Resins and plastics

* Polyoxymethylene plastic (Delrin)
* Phenol formaldehyde resin
* Urea formaldehyde resin
* Melamine resin
