= History =

Created in 2007, the award is given to the Air Traffic Controller in the Melbourne Terminal Area (ML TMA) deemed by their peers to have performed at the highest level over an entire year.Though the inaugural award was tainted with controversy given that it was the eventual winner Randal Stevens who set the criteria, it has regardless quickly gathered regard as an important honour of recognition.Fact|date=June 2008The award sets out to raise the bar in terms of professional standards within the ML TMA cell.

Retrospective awards

Some consideration is currently being given to announcing retrospective awards, to possibly honour now retired ATC legends such as 'Mate' Braden, Pete Fraser, "Blue" Black and the soon to depart Ross Farrer.

Other awards

Under consideration for 2008 is the addition of a second award, tentatively titled the "RAS Rising Star". The full criteria are still to be determined, though it is established that the recipient must be under the age of 40, and have spent considerable time in the MAW position. Ross Johns is the first person to be discounted from this award, at the request of JetStar.Fact|date=June 2008

Additionally, following the lead of ML TMA, other stations such as ESSENDON TOWER (EN TWR) are also considering instituting similar awards.
