Montana Legal Services Association
- Montana Legal Services Association
The Montana Legal Services Association (MLSA) is a federally and privately funded program that provides free legal assistance in civil cases to low-income residents of Montana. MLSA currently has nine offices servicing Montana, including the main office located in the state capitol, Helena.
MLSA was formed in 1966 with aid from the Legal Services Corporation (LSC). It is still the sole provider of free legal services to Montanans. Due to restrictions on LSC funding, MLSA cannot handle criminal cases, and therefore can only provide assistance in civil matters.
MLSA currently partners with Pro Bono Net to maintain Montana Pro Bono Net, a web service to recruit and organize volunteer attorneys, as well as Montana Law Help, which provides Montana-specific legal information on a variety of topics.
Objective
"The mission of MLSA is to protect and enhance the civil legal rights of, and promote systemic change for, Montanans living in poverty." [ [http://www.montanalawhelp.org/Program/575/index.cfm?pagename=homepage MLSA homepage] ]
