Giuseppe Callegari was born in
Venice , and received the Sacrament of Confirmation onNovember 23 ,1851 . He studied at the patriarchalseminary in Venice, receiving the clerical tonsure onDecember 18 ,1858 , and the diaconate onDecember 19 ,1863 . Callegari was ordained to the priesthood onMarch 26 ,1864 , and then served asprofessor of the "gymnasii" and of moral theology (1865-1873) at the patriarchal seminary. He did pastoral work in Venice from 1865 to 1880 as well, and was namedcounselor of its ecclesiastical tribunal in 1878 and later its prosynod al examiner. A contributing writer to "Il Veneto Cattolico", he became a very close friend of Giuseppe Sarto, the future Pope Pius X, who also would be canonized in 1954.On
February 28 ,1880 , Callegari was appointed Bishop of Treviso byPope Leo XIII , who granted him a dispensation for not holding a degree. He received his episcopal consecration on the followingMarch 11 from PatriarchDomenico Agostini , with BishopsGiovanni Berengo andGiuseppe Apollonio serving as co-consecrators, in St. Mark's Basilica. He was given the title ofAssistant at the Pontifical Throne onAugust 24 ,1882 , and named Bishop of Padua onSeptember 25 of that same year, whilst retaining the administration ofTreviso until the appointment of his successor.In 1892, Callegari was offered the patriarchate of Venice but declined, recommending Bishop Giuseppe Sarto instead. He also served as
President of "Società Scientifica dei Cattolici Italiani". Sarto, having been electedPope onAugust 4 ,1903 , created Callegari Cardinal Priest of "S. Maria in Cosmedin" in his firstconsistory , on the followingNovember 9 .The Cardinal died in
