American Society of Transplantation

The American Society of Transplantation (AST) [ [http://www.a-s-t.org] ] is an international organization of over 2,700 transplant professionals dedicated to advancing the field of transplantation through the promotion of research, education, advocacy, and organ donation to improve patient care. [ [http://www.healthfinder.gov/orgs/HR2669.htm Healthfinder.gov] ]

The AST was founded in 1982 with the goal of offering a forum for the exchange of knowledge, scientific information and expertise in the field of transplantation. The history of the AST begins in 1981, when the charter members of the AST met at the annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN). It was at this meeting where they decided that a separate society was to be organized for transplant physicians. The American Society of Transplant Physicians (ASTP) was founded on May 10, 1982 and was a society open to physicians and health professionals who were interested in transplantation medicine and biology. In 1998, ASTP changed its name to the American Society of Transplantation (AST).

In over 25 years, the ASTP has grown from a society of less than 200 with representatives from the US and Canada to the AST, a society of more than 2,700 members with an international membership and one of the most respected Society's in the field.

The American Transplant Congress, is the annual joint meeting of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) and the AST. [ [http://www.atcmeeting.org] ]
