The 2002 Stanley Cup Finals were played from June 4 to June 13 between the Detroit Red Wings and the Carolina Hurricanes, making their first Stanley Cup Final appearance. Detroit defeated Carolina in five games to win their tenth Stanley Cup championship.

The series featured the two NHL franchises Gordie Howe played for. This was the first appearance in the Cup Finals for the Hurricanes (formerly the Hartford Whalers), who made an unlikely run to the Cup. While they were seeded 3rd as a division winner, in actuality they had the second-lowest point total (91) for a playoff team not only in the Eastern Conference, but also the whole NHL. In their whole NHL history, they had only won one playoff series prior to this season (as the Whalers), and had streaks of 5 and 6 seasons in which they did not make the playoffs.

Paths to the Final

Carolina defeated the New Jersey Devils 4–2, the Montreal Canadiens 4–3 and the Toronto Maple Leafs 4–2 to advance to the Final. Detroit defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4–2, the St. Louis Blues 4–1 and the Colorado Avalanche 4–3.

engraving-notes=Manny Legace's name was misspelled MANNY LEGECE with an "E" instead of an "A". An "A" was stamped over the second "E" twice to correct this mistake.

Detroit wanted to include 30 Non Players on the cup including the 7 Ilitch children, 7 scouts, and office staff (Paul MacDonald and Nancy Beard). Maxium Kuznetsov who played 39 games (1 short of required 40 games played to guarantee his name on the Stanley Cup), Sean Avery played 36 games for Detroit (36 in the minors). Both players did not play in the playoffs. Uwe Krupp also played 8 regular season games and 2 playoff games, after missing over 60 games due to a back injury. These 3 players, along with 2 trainers, were left off the cup. It is tradition that Ass't Equipment Manager Tim Abbott(on cup in 1997, 1998), and Masseur Sergei Tchekmarevare are included on the Stanley Cup. Since only a maximum 52 names can be engraved the cup each year, Detroit chose these 5 members to be left off. Each team is required to dress 20 out of a 23 players roster each game. However, Detroit only engraved 22 players on the Stanley Cup in 2003.

Note Paul MacDonald and Nancy Beard were with Detroit when they won the Stanley Cup in 1997, 1998, but their names were not engraved on the Stanley Cup.
* Steve Yzerman and Brendan Shanahan became the 2nd and 3rd players to win the Olympic Gold (with Team Canada) and the Stanley Cup in the same year (See 1980 Ken Morrow).
* Brett Hull and Chris Chelios won the Olympic Silver (with team United States) and the Stanley Cup in the same year.
