Talbot Trail Public School is a public elementary school in Windsor, Ontario. Built in 2005 to ease overcrowding at neighbouring elementary schools, Talbot Trail is known for being the first of several planned "themed" school to be built in Ontario, and the school's theme of exploration led it to be honoured as one of the Top 25 Schools in Canada by a 2007 edition of "Today's Parent" magazine.

History

During the 1990's, a housing boom in Windsor lead to rapidly rising enrollment in the region, particularly in elementary schools.cite web| last = Oshar | first = Patti | coauthors = Janet Andersen, Tom Fleming, Judy Hastings| title = About our school - Roseland Public Schhol| publisher = Greater Essex County District School Board| date = 2007-12-11| url = http://www.gecdsb.on.ca/schools/ELEM/roseland/About%20Our%20School%20Page.htm| accessdate =2008-01-18 ] By 2000, the problem had become critical, with several area schools housing hundreds more students than their designs called for, and elementary students being temporarily moved to area high schools to ease overcrowding. The groundbreaking, presided over by Windsor mayor Eddie Francis, was financed by issuing $50 million in debt, part of which was also earmarked for Lakeshore Discovery School. [Citation| last =Wolfson| first = Monica | title = Ont. cost concerns put schools on hold; $40M in construction, renovations under review| newspaper = The Windsor Star| pages = A.1| date = 2008-01-11] Construction took only a single year, coming in both on-time and under-budget, [Citation| last =Wolfson| first = Monica | title = Bellewood school cost doubles: Public board under budget on two others, but over on Begley| newspaper = The Windsor Star| pages = A.12| date = 2006-11-02] and the first classes were held in the September 2006, 228 students came from Roseland Public School, and more from other schools. [Citation| last =Bellavy | first =Emily | title = 'One of a kind' school honoured | newspaper = The Windsor Star| pages = A.3 | date = 2007-06-17] The school was the first of several "themed" schools to be built in Essex County; Talbot Trail's design was inspired by the idea of "exploration". Called "inspirational" by "Today's Parent" magazine, the interior of Talbot Trail features a Viking long ship, stonework emulating the Earth's layers, and fiber-optic constellations in the library. The school is also two floors high.Citation| last =Bedal | first = Sara| title = How do you sum up a great school in 150 words or less?| newspaper = Today's Parent| pages = 70-78| year = September 2007| url = http://www.todaysparent.com/education/general/article.jsp?content=20070807_144712_4676&page=2] Unlike the rest of the schools in Windsor, Ontario Talbot Trail contains an elevator.

Athletics

The school has many sports teams such as basketball, track and field, cross-country, badminton, soccer, floor hockey, volleyball and more.

Community involvement

The school is sometimes involved in fundraising activities, such as a Food Drive when the school raises cans and boxes with food from students and teachers and donates them to the poor.
