Altmann was 80 years old before she made her screen debut in 1961 as Veronika in Drei Eisbären, Die. She appeared as Grandma Georgina (Charlie Bucket's grandmother) in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Altmann died on Christmas Eve 1971 at the age of 90. Her final screen role, in the television series Tatort, went on air in the new year.
