The line traces its origin to the Tōnō (Eastern Mino) line, an 11.9 km, 768 mm gauge railway that opened in 1918. The segment from Shin-Tajimi to Hiromi Station was nationalized in 1929, and named the Taita Line. Extensions and upgrades took place from time to time, and in 1987, with the division of the
