United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 8.2square mile s (21.3km² ), of which, 8.2 square miles (21.3 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.24%) is water.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 7,549 people, 3,245 households, and 2,028 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 918.6 people per square mile (354.6/km²). There were 3,638 housing units at an average density of 442.7/sq mi (170.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 67.37% White, 28.83% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.77% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 1.38% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.72% of the population.There were 3,245 households out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.5% were married couples living together, 19.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% were non-families. 33.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the town the population was spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 83.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $24,243, and the median income for a family was $30,000. Males had a median income of $26,952 versus $19,601 for females. The
per capita income for the town was $15,248. About 15.6% of families and 19.2% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 25.5% of those under age 18 and 15.4% of those age 65 or over.Attractions
Forest City has various museums to visit ranging from farm museums to a African American art museums. The newest attraction is that of the Bennett Classical Auto Museum located near the town elementary school Forest City-Dunbar Elementary School, on 241 Vance Street, the admission is ($8-10) for adults and $4 for children. The next is the Rutherford County Farm Museum located on 240 Depot St., the cost adults $2, children free. If you go a little far you will end up at Maimyetta Black Fine Art Museum, located on 404 Hardin St.
