Kokkini, Corfu

Kokkini or Kokini (Greek, Modern: Κοκκίνι), older forms: -o and -on also with the second a accented is a village in the western part of the island of Corfu, it is the municipal seat of Parelioi. Its 2001 population was 733 for the village. Kokkini is located west of the city of Corfu, north-northwest of Argyrades. Several hills dominate the area and farmlands cover the area.

Population

Information

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, most of the population partly left for larger towns and cities especially Patras. Most of the buildings were not damaged. The population remained steady since the mid to late 20th century. Houses were stone-built until the 1950s and did not surpass modern-style homes until the 1980s. Its population experienced growth from 1981 and experienced a booming population that lasted until the early to mid 2000s and was shortly a boomtown.

Kokkini has a school, a few churches, a post office, and a square ("plateia"). Its nearest lyceum (middle school) and gymnasium (secondary school) are in Giannades.
