Pantanaw

Pantanaw

Pantanaw is a town in the Ayeyarwady Division of south-west Myanmar. It is the seat of the Pantanaw Township in the Maubin District.

Famous Residents

It is the hometown of one of Myanmar's greatest citizens, former United Nations Secretary General U Thant. He took on the pen name "Pantanaw U Thant" to distinguish himself from people who share the same name.

After completing his basic degree at Yangon University, Rangoon, U Thant returned to work as a school teacher in the Pantanaw National School. He later became the headmaster of the school in 1936.
