Irish Film Board

The Irish Film Board ("IFB - Bord Scannán na hÉireann") is Ireland’s national film agency and major funding production company.

History

The IFB was reconstituted in April 1993 under the Film Board Act 1980 (subsequently ammended). The annual budget for the IFB is decided by Dáil Éireann and had a total capital budget of €17 million in 2007, equivalent to roughly £12.74 million. The Irish Film Board is under the aegis of Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism. Because of these actions, the Irish film industry gets promoted, as does the Irish territory for international production location.

Present

The IFB work on a variety of projects simultaneously, including the upcoming feature Grace O'Malley, written by Anne Chambers and Sarah Lawson, "The Roaring Girl" (to star Sally Hawkins), "Cherry Bomb" (starring Kimberley Nixon and Rupert Grint) and the Dylan Moran vehicle "A Film With Me In It". Other projects include "The Daisy Chain", starring Samantha Morton.

Future

The Irish Film Channel ("Bealach Scannán na hÉireann" in Irish) is a proposed free-to-air public television channel to launch in the Republic of Ireland in 2009. It was formally announced by the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Eamon Ryan, on 15 May, 2008 [ [http://www.dcmnr.gov.ie/Press+Releases/Minister+Ryan+welcomes+new+Irish+Film+Channel.htm Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources - "Minister Ryan welcomes new Irish Film Channel"] ] . The concept for the channel came from Bord Scannán na hÉireann. The channel will air Irish, European and International cinema, with a strong emphasis on Irish productions. It has been proposed that channel will initially air three films per day on the channel on a regular basis seven days a week. The channel will not air commercials. The addition of a new television channel falls in line with the launch of the national free-to-air digital terrestrial and satellite service that is yet to be named and is scheduled to launch in late 2008.

The new film channel is just one of the new proposed channels to launch in 2009; on the same day Oireachtas TV was also announced.
