World War II , a now closed and recently demolished General Motors factory across the street from the airport, produced military aircraft. The airport was built to allow testing and transportation of these aircraft. Since 2003, the majority of the airport has been replaced with a shopping center named Aviation Plaza. The airport retains its main building, hangars, and runway 9/27. The traffic helicopters forWABC-TV 's Eyewitness News are hangared at Linden.The airport served as a temporary
road racing course in 1954 whenAl Keller drove a Jaguar to victory in the then-NASCAR Grand National Division (now known as theSprint Cup Series .)
