railway station serving the villages ofWhatstandwell and Crich Carr inDerbyshire ,England . The station is located on theDerwent Valley Line from Derby to Matlock.Opened by the
Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midlands Junction Railway in 1849, though it wasn't listed in the timetable until 1853. The first station was "Watstandwell Bridge" "(sic)" north of the convert|149|yd|sing=on Whatstandwell Tunnel, behind the Derwent Hotel. The original platform still exists, though the area was used as a goods yard when the present station was opened in 1894. It then became "Whatstandwell".A little way north was High Peak Junction at the base of the former rope-worked incline of the
Cromford and High Peak Railway .The station is served by
East Midlands Trains , who operated local services from Derby to Matlock. Services are formed usingdiesel multiple unit s of Classes 150, 153, 156 or 158.For journeys beginning at Whatstandwell, tickets may be bought on the train for any destination in the country. (From Derby, tickets must be bought at the ticket office) Journey time to Derby is approximately 21 minutes. Services are approximately two-hourly. From 13 December 2008 it is planned to increase these to once an hour.
The footbridge at the station leads to the
Cromford Canal towpath and to a bridge over the canal to Sandy Lane and the village. Please note however that both bridges are to be removed temporarily for refurbishment in January 2009 for two months.External links
