- HMS Topaze (1858)
HMS "Topaze" was a 24-gun "Liffey" class wooden screw
frigate of theRoyal Navy . She was launched on1858-05-12 , at Devonport Dockyard,Plymouth . Her crew assisted in the building of theRace Rocks Lighthouse inBritish Columbia ,Canada , and laid a bronze tablet in1863 at theJuan Fernández Islands commemorating the stay of marooned sailorAlexander Selkirk . [Kraske (2005), p.100] The voyage toEaster Island in1868 saw the crew remove theMoai "Moai Hava" andHoa Hakananai'a and ship them to Britain, whereHoa Hakananai'a can now be seen in theBritish Museum ."Topaze" was sold on
14 February 1884 and broken up at Charlton.Notes
