- Sustainability Alliance
The Sustainability Alliance is a professional organisation based in the
United Kingdom .Most of the major professional bodies in the United Kingdom have special interest groups to address
sustainability issues. They formed an alliance in 2002 in pursuit of a more holistic approach. The Sustainability Alliance promotes inter-disciplinary approaches to environmental and societal problems. It acts as a focal point and clearing-house for professional and learned bodies, on sustainability issues. It provides a point of contact between the UK government, other relevant groups and the professions, on sustainability issues. It co-ordinates events and initiatives and make outputs available to members of participating organisations, for example developing a common framework for the integration of sustainable development education, training and continuing professional development (CPD). It draws together member organisations’ activities at the regional level however each member organisation remains free to pursue their own activities as they see fit.
The member organisations of the alliance are spread across a range of scientific, engineering, architectural, and other technical disciplines. They are attempting to use systems thinking, to include the social, ethical, economic, political and cultural systems that surround and shape technology. For example, instead of just designing buildings, professionals are now devising wider, integrated environments where people can live and work. These are sometimes called Sustainable Communities.
