- Marius De Vries
Marius de Vries (born Marius van Wyk de Vries) is an English
music producer . He was born inLondon in 1961. He has been behind some of the key albums and singles of recent times, (gathering five Grammy nominations along the way), the best known of these being his writing and production contributions to Madonna's "Bedtime Stories" and "Ray of Light " albums. He is also a long time collaborator and friend ofBjörk 's and the bandMassive Attack . He co-producedNeil Finn 's album, "Try Whistling This ", andRobbie Robertson 's album, "Contact from the Underworld of Redboy ", as well as producing David Gray's latest album, "Life in Slow Motion ".In 1989, De Vries was the Musical Director on the
Rick Astley world tour. He headed a 10 piece band which includedLes Nemes and Phil Smith, formerly ofHaircut 100 onbass guitar andsaxophone , andCharlie Morgan on drums who played for many artists, includingElton John .De Vries also produced and co-wrote
Darren Hayes ' song, "I Forgive You ", from "The Tension and the Spark " (2004).De Vries produced both of
Rufus Wainwright 's "Want " albums, and appeared in the documentary, "All I Want", discussing Wainwright's life. He is documented as saying that Wainwright's song, "I Don't Know What It Is ", was one of the most complex production challenges he has ever faced. The song included hundreds of separate parts which de Vries had to fit into a five-and-a-half-minute song.De Vries was the Music Director for the 2001 film, "
Moulin Rouge! ", and worked withNellee Hooper on the film soundtrack for "Romeo and Juliet ", as co-composer, programmer, and co-producer. Both of these projects won de Vries BAFTA awards, and he was awarded an Ivor Novello Award for his compositional work on the former. He also wrote the score forStephan Elliott 's surreal thriller, "Eye of the Beholder".Most recently, de Vries has produced and written with
Josh Groban on his multi-platinum 2007 release, "Awake", and mixedRufus Wainwright 's new (2007) LP, "Release the Stars ".He is currently developing an hour-long modern dance work with choreographer Rafael Bonachela.
On a side note, de Vries is related to South African music producer
Piet van Wyk de Vries , who works almost exclusively in the South AfricanAfrikaans speaking market.Marius has a
