August Leopold von Reuss (
November 5 ,1841 -September 4 ,1924 ) was an Austrianophthalmologist who was a native of Bilin,Bohemia . He studied at Karl-Ferdinand University inPrague , and at theUniversity of Vienna , where he obtained his degree in 1865. AtVienna he was a student ofErnst Wilhelm von Brücke (1819-1892) andEduard Jäger von Jaxtthal (1818-1884). From 1866 to 1870 he was an assistant toophthalmologist Carl Ferdinand von Arlt (1812-1887), and later became director of the ophthalmology department at the "Allgemeine Poliklinik" in Vienna. He was the son ofgeologist August Emanuel von Reuss (1811-1873), and father topediatrician August von Reuss (1879-1954).Reuss made several contributions involving the mathematical aspects of ophthalmic medicine, and performed studies involving ophthalmoscopy, ophthalmometry, curvature of the
cornea , andrefraction of the eye. He also performed extensive research ofcolor blindness , and developed a pseudo-isochromatic color chart called the "Reuss Farbtafeln" which was formerly used to test color blindness.He published over 75 scientific works, including an important 1902 treatise concerning the
visual field in nervous disorders called "Das Gesichtsfeld bei functionellen Nervenleiden".References
