Its seat is the town of Prudnik, which lies approximately convert|46|km|mi|0 south-west of the regional capital Opole.

The gmina covers an area of convert|122.13|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 29,506 (out of which the population of Prudnik amounts to 23,133, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 6,373).
