Gary Orlando Forbes (born February 25, 1985 in Colón, Panama) was a Panamanian/American basketball player for University of Massachusetts Amherst. The height|ft=6|in=6|wiki=yes, convert|221|lb|kg st|abbr=on|lk=on shooting guard/small forward graduated at Benjamin Banneker Academy in Brooklyn, New York and chose to play at the University of Virginia after receiving scholarships from other colleges such as Connecticut, Georgia Tech and St. John's University.fact|date=June 2008 After the departure of head coach Pete Gillen, he decided to transfer to the University of Massachusetts following his sophomore season at Virginia. Due to NCAA transfer rules, he was forced to sit out as a redshirted junior.

College Basketball

Forbes enrolled at the University of Virginia in 2003. As a freshman, Gary played in all 31 games and started 17 games while averaging 7.6 points per game. In his sophomore season, Gary played in all 29 games and averaged 9.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Scored a career high 23 points at UNC.

After his sophomore season Gary transferred to the Atlantic 10 Conference to play for the UMass Minutemen. In his junior season Forbes averaged 13 points and 5.8 rebounds per game as the third option behind Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme.

Coming into his Senior year, Gary was named to Preseson Atlantic 10 Third Team. Gary is currently averaging 20 points and 8 rebounds a game while leading the Minutemen to an 23-10 record, beating the likes of Syracuse, Boston College and Dayton.Gary recently scored his 1000th career point at UMass and is currently the 29th all-time scorer at UMass with 1,084 points. Gary is the 07-08 Atlantic 10 conference player of the year. Forbes also was named to the Atlantic 10 1st team.

FIBA Americas Championship

In the summer of 2007, Gary played for Panamanian National Team in the FIBA Americas Championship in Las Vegas. In four games with the team he averaged 17.8 points and 4.5 rebounds a game. He scored a game high 29 points against Argentina.

Professional career

On August 7, 2008, Gary Forbes signed contract with Italy's top league club Basket Napoli
