Its seat is the town of Pilawa, which lies approximately convert|10|km|mi|0 north-west of Garwolin and convert|47|km|mi|0|abbr=on south-east of Warsaw.

The gmina covers an area of convert|77.25|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 10,435 (out of which the population of Pilawa amounts to 4,196, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 6,239).
