Patriarch Ignace Moussa I [Cardinal] (Daoud) was born Basile Moussa Daoud on18 September 1930 . He is thePatriarch Emeritus ofAntioch for theSyrian Catholic Church , aCardinal Bishop , and Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches in theRoman Catholic Church .Born in
Meskaneh ,Syria , he was ordained apriest on17 October 1954 . He studied Canon law at thePontifical Lateran University inRome . In 1977, he was electedBishop ofCairo by theSyrian Patriarchal Synod . He was consecrated toArchbishop ofHoms for the Catholic Syrians in 1994 and toPatriarch of Antioch for theSyrian Catholic Church on 1998. He retired from the Patriarchal See in 2001.He was then proclaimed Cardinal by
Pope John Paul II in the consistory of21 February 2001 , having been named Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches in November of the previous year. He was one of the cardinal electors who participated in the 2005 papal conclave that electedPope Benedict XVI . On 9th June 2007, Patriarch-Emeritus Ignace Moussa I resigned from the Congregation for the Oriental Churches.He is still a member of the following dicasteries of the Roman Curia:
