Francis Joseph Murray (
February 3 ,1911 , New York –March 15 1996 ) was amathematician , known for his foundational work (withJohn von Neumann ) onfunctional analysis , and what subsequently became known asvon Neumann algebras . He received hisPhD fromColumbia University in 1936. He taught atDuke University .In 1967 he was awarded the
Outstanding Civilian Service Medal by the U. S. Army.elected publications
